Social & Emotional Learning Kit for Educators

A walk-through on how to use Social & Emotional Learning (SEL) every day

Social and emotional learning isn't new terminology, but it's seen an increase in discussions with educators since the COVID-19 pandemic first touched us back in March 2020. Many of ETR's resources have focused on SEL and mental health over the years. This SEL Kit provides you with a collection of ETR resources on this important topic.

What is Social & Emotional Learning (SEL)?

The Collaborative for Academic, Social and Emotional Learning (CASEL) defines social and emotional learning as: The process through which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions.

SEL Outcomes and Impact

What happens when we fully engage with our students on an emotional level? CASEL has been doing research on this over the past two decades and has discovered some very compelling information:

CASEL Video Benefits of SEL
  • Leads to improved academic outcomes and improved student behaviors
  • Has long-term impacts (up to 18 years later on academics, conduct problems, emotional distress and drug use)
  • Has an 11:1 return on investment, meaning for every dollar invested, there is an $11 return
  • Can help reduce poverty and improve economic mobility, along with improving lifetime outcomes
