Tobacco Prevention Resources for Youth and Communities
National Cancer Prevention Month is an annual awareness dedicated to the steps we can take to reduce cancer risk for individuals and communities.
Research by the American Cancer Society found that 42% of cancer cases and 45% of cancer deaths are linked to modifiable risk factors in the United States and thus could be preventable. An example of this is smoking cigarettes, as it’s the number one risk factor contributing to overall cancer cases and deaths in 2014.
ETR offers and supports evidence-based tobacco prevention programs and projects that provide individuals with techniques to help people evaluate their tobacco use, find resources to make a plan to quit, and materials to share within their communities.
World Cancer Day is held annually on February 4th during National Cancer Prevention Month to raise awareness about cancer, provide prevention resources, and mobilize action to address the global cancer epidemic.
At ETR, tobacco prevention projects are vital to creating a world where all individuals and communities can achieve their best health. In our latest blog, learn more about Communities Energized for Health, a project of ETR, addressing secondhand smoke exposure where Californians live, work, and play.
This piece also touches on the health effects of secondhand smoke, the importance of smokefree multiunit housing in CEH’s work, and why smoking cessation is essential to public health and preventing cancer. Estimated read time: 4 minutes.
New and Revised Materials: Tobacco Education Clearinghouse of California
Check out the Tobacco Education Clearinghouse of California (TECC), a project of ETR, to meet a variety of tobacco prevention needs.
TECC is a statewide technical assistance provider that supports the development and distribution of effective educational materials and social media messaging for the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) and California Tobacco Prevention Program (CTPP) funded projects at no cost.
According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), e-cigarettes were the most commonly used tobacco product among middle and high school students in the United States in 2024. That statistic can be unsettling, but it demonstrates how important it is to educate teens to make healthier decisions.
