Ending the HIV Epidemic with Health Equity

Happy young people outdoors putting their hands in the center of the group for togetherness.

December 1st marked the 37th year of recognizing World AIDS Day. This awareness reinvigorates our commitment to preventing new HIV infections while providing essential services to those globally impacted by the epidemic.

HIV prevention is a core element in ETR’s body of work. We published some of the first non-governmental medically accurate information on HIV—offering health promotion materials, articles, and even a school-based curriculum as early as 1986.

This day highlights how vital equitable access to inclusive, evidence-based health information is for youth and communities to make informed choices to achieve their best health.

We hope you take time to commemorate those lost from an AIDS-related illness, support someone living with HIV, or unite with others to reduce HIV in your communities.

World AIDS Day presents an opportunity to both celebrate our progress over the last four decades, recognize the work that lies ahead of us, and reflect on the many heroes lost. These may be people living with HIV (PLWH), changemaker allies, or people who reminded us that HIV (or any disease) is only one aspect of anyone’s life.

In 2024, we lost some greats who changed the lives of so many who work in the HIV field and beyond—Dr. Ada Adimora, Hydeia Broadbent, Cecilia Gentili, and Cornelius Baker.

Read this new blog by ETR’s Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Vignetta Charles, highlighting the contributions of these partners in the fight against HIV and honoring their legacies. They not only inspire us as an organization with a longstanding commitment to working with individuals and communities with HIV, but further our work grounded in the spirit of the messages they centered through their actions. Healthcare providers play a crucial role in preventing HIV by empowering patients to make healthier choices. Patient-provider communication can either inhibit behavior change or when done successfully, promote positive decision-making. Motivational Interviewing (MI) is an evidence-based, patient-centered, collaborative communication style that providers can adopt as part of a comprehensive HIV prevention strategy.

Learn more about Motivational Interviewing in this Physician’s Weekly article by Lauren Ranalli, MPH, ETR’s Director of Communications and Public Affairs. She provides seven prompts for motivational interviewing with patients and when to effectively utilize them as a healthcare provider or clinical staff. Estimated read time: 2 minutes.
