Recognizing Red Ribbon Week with ETR

Three young people happily walking through a school hallway.

Red Ribbon Week is an annual awareness event dedicated to inspiring individuals to play their part in fostering safe, healthy, and drug-free communities.

For decades, ETR has worked extensively to create resources, services, and evidence-based programs that provide youth with the skills to avoid drug use, resist social pressures, and evaluate unsafe usage.

Our work in alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs (ATOD) supports the health and well-being of youth and communities across the country, and we’re proud to have our resources utilized during Red Ribbon Week and beyond.

In this week’s newsletter, check out:

  • An on-demand webinar on the topic of youth-led substance use prevention with guest experts from the organization Youth to Youth.
  • Free tobacco prevention materials from the Tobacco Education Clearinghouse of California (TECC), a project of ETR.
  • A Physician’s Weekly article written by ETRians on the issue of prescription drug misuse among adolescents.
  • The opportunity to submit studies to the Teen Pregnancy Prevention Evidence Review, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Read the Article

Prescription drug misuse is a growing public health concern, especially among adolescents. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) Youth Risk Behavior Survey, over 12% of high school students surveyed in the United States have taken prescription pain medication without a doctor’s prescription or taken it differently than its intended use.

Teens and young adults may misuse prescription drugs for many reasons, including exposure to trauma, to feel good or get high, reduce appetite, improve concentration, or to feel accepted by peers.
