Learn, create, and lead through a paid fellowship designed to help students grow as public health communicators!
What is B-PHI?
The Black Public Health Influencer Fellowship (B-PHI) is a paid leadership and professional development opportunity for students attending Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).
Funded by Viiv Healthcare and administered by ETR, the fellowship helps participants build skills in public health communication, content creation, social media strategy, human-centered design, and community engagement.
Through training, mentorship, and hands-on project experience, fellows learn how to create engaging health communication campaigns while strengthening their leadership and professional skills.
Fellows receive:
- Training in public health communication, social media strategy, and human-centered design
- One-on-one mentorship from experienced professionals
- Funding to support project development and content creation
- Opportunities to build professional networks and leadership experience
- A stipend of up to $7,000
- Additional project support funds for tools, technology, and materials
At the end of the fellowship, participants showcase their work at the annual B-PHI retreat before public health professionals and other leaders in the field. Select fellows may also have opportunities to continue collaborating with ETR after the fellowship concludes.

Why B-PHI?
Black communities have long faced barriers to accessing accurate, relevant, and trusted health information. Effective public health communication can help bridge those gaps by making information more accessible and relatable.
B-PHI partners with HBCU students to develop the next generation of public health communicators and leaders. Through mentorship, training, and hands-on experience, fellows create social media campaigns that support sexual health education, increase awareness of health resources, and engage their communities.

Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must:
- Be currently enrolled at an accredited Historically Black College and University (HBCU)
- Be pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree
- Identify as Black, African American, or of African descent
Black LGBTQI+ and gender nonconforming students are especially encouraged to apply.
Participation Requirements
Fellows are expected to:
- Attend required virtual trainings, meetings, and fellowship activities
- Meet regularly with their assigned mentor
- Participate in the annual in-person B-PHI retreat
- Create and share public health content as part of their fellowship project
Most fellowship activities are conducted virtually. Travel and lodging costs associated with attending the annual retreat are covered by ETR.
Compensation and Support
Fellows receive:
- A monthly stipend of $1,000, for up to $7,000 total based on participation
- Up to $1,000 in additional project support funds for technology, software, equipment, and other approved project expenses
- Access to 1-1 mentorship, professional development opportunities, and a growing network of public health professionals
